In general I agree with that, but:

- it's really not much additionnal code; in particular only
  one test in log_connection()
- people tend to come to me with these questions on log
  systems I don't know
- arguably it's good for performance: if you get millions of
  https connections that you don't want to log, you save
  yourself all the string building done in log_connection()

These are listed more or less in order of importance :-)
